What To Expect During The Drilling Process

1. Estimating and Scheduling

The process typically begins with a phone consultation and estimate. Once the estimate is approved, a deposit and signed agreement are required to secure a place on our active drilling schedule.

Drilling schedules can vary depending on workload, weather conditions, permitting, and ground conditions.

2. Drill Site Selection

Drill site location is determined using several factors including property layout, terrain, accessibility, nearby well information, geological conditions, and years of drilling experience in the area.

We also often douse or “witch” for water as part of the site selection process in combination with our experience and local well knowledge.

3. Drilling The Well

During drilling, steel casing is installed through the upper ground layers and into solid rock to help protect the well and stabilize the borehole.

Drilling depth varies greatly depending on the property, local geology, and groundwater conditions. Some wells produce strong water flows at shallow depths, while others require deeper drilling. Throughout the drilling process, we monitor water production and formation conditions to help determine the best course of action.

4. Well Development and Yield Testing

Once drilling is completed, the well is developed using our drill rig with a large-capacity compressor to clean and develop the well. The well is then tested to evaluate water production. Water testing is also completed at this time.

Water production can vary based on geological conditions.

5. Pump System Installation

After drilling is completed, our pump crew then installs the complete pump system including the well pump, drop pipe, wire, pressure tank, controls, and water line connections.

Pump sizing and system design are based on well production, home size, water demand, and property layout. We will work with you to design your entire system.

6. Water Testing and Filtration

Basic water testing is typically performed after drilling and at the time of yield testing. Because naturally occurring minerals and contaminants are common in groundwater, some wells may require water treatment or filtration systems. If filtration is needed, Carter Services can provide a separate estimate for the recommended treatment system.

Common filtration concerns in Middle Tennessee include: iron, sulfur, hard water, sediment, and pH correction.
